Used universally in herbal medicine, this root is attributed with shamanic qualities in Native American folk medicine. The rhizome has an intensely aromatic fragrance and a tangy, pungent and bitter taste. In Ayurveda Calamus is considered an aromatic, bitter tonic which stimulates appetite and digestion and is a nervine sedative.
In contemporary medicine it has spasmolytic, carminative and sedative effects, in addition to being externally a stimulant, aromatic, expectorant that is antispasmodic and a powerful nervine sedative.
The rhizome has an expectorant action, due to the presence of the essential oil.
In the form of infusion it is tonic, stomachic or carminative, also anti-periodic. The volatile oil aromatic and antiseptic.
Use: Helpful for Angina, arthritis, asthma, diarrhea, colds, colic pain, cough, deafness,, dyspepsia, epilepsy, fever, flatulence, gastritis. This herb can be used to make teas, or added to smoking blends.
